Outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers are praising
the dependability of bear pepper spray. It is often cited as a proven
protection method and is now carried by hikers, hunters, rangers, and
biologists. A bear encounter can be one of the most frightening
experiences a hiker can have, even though the animal usually wants to
avoid you as much as you want to avoid it. Despite our wild imaginations,
humans are not on their preferred list of good things to eat.
Nevertheless, bears are unpredictable and will attack if they perceive a
threat.
While avoiding an encounter is the key, bear pepper spray
should only be used as a last resort if the animal charges. A small
9-ounce can will accurately spray a powerful shotgun-blast fog anywhere up
to 30 feet away, hitting the bear’s eyes and/or nose with oleoresin
capsicum. Studies have shown that the powerful “OC” ingredient is highly
effective against aggressive grizzlies, black bears, and brown bears. Bear
pepper spray is a special formula (it’s not the same as regular red pepper
spray) and is approved for use in national parks where bear habitats are
common and firearms are prohibited.
