The term OC (oleoresin capsicum) is a horticultural term which refers to
chili peppers, and is the eye-burning and inflammatory agent used in a pepper
spray product. There are many different kinds of chili peppers including
jalapeno, chiletpin, cayenne, and habanero, and we all know how they can cause
irritation if even a tiny amount is accidentally rubbed in the eyes. That’s
because they all contain a powerful substance — the alkaloid capsaicin. Just a
single drop of this tasteless and odorless capsaicin in 100,000 drops of water
will create a heat noticeable by humans. In fact, people can detect capsaicin
at one part per ten million, which is why a pepper spray product uses it as
its active ingredient!
A pepper spray product is
designed to inflame the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, throat and lungs,
and cause a painful burning sensation. It is also proven to cause
uncontrollable tearing from the eyes, a hacking cough, choking, and nausea —
but yet the product is not life threatening. If you’ve been looking for extra
protection and peace of mind when you’re out and about, carrying a pepper
spray product will be a reliable, and non-lethal, form of defense.
